Employment Opportunity – Museum Manager

The Hudson's Hope Historical Society invites applications from qualified individuals to manage the operations of its Museum.

Our Museum is housed in an original Hudson's Bay Company building. The museum site overlooks the Peace River and the main building contains dinosaur displays from the late Cretaceous period, the fur trade with First Nations people, pioneer exploration and settlement, and the construction of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. This building also holds archives of artifacts, photos, maps, and documents, an office and a souvenir/gift shop.

Hudson's Hope, located in northeast BC, is a welcoming community of 1,100 people. The municipality offers many indoor and outdoor recreational activities and facilities .

The operation of the Hudson’s Hope Museum depends upon various funding sources and donations including the local government.

The Hudson’s Hope Historical Society is currently evaluating the feasibility of expansions through the development of a business plan.

In conjunction with the Board of Directors and the committees, the Manager is responsible for the overall operational and financial planning and management, the recruitment and supervision of seasonal personnel, and the securing of curatorial, operational, capital, and project funding through grants. The Manager ensures the quality of the museum’s exhibitions, collections, and public programming, builds and maintains good working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders, funders, donors, and the public.
The successful candidate will have en engaging personality, strong interpersonal and supervisory skills and leadership abilities, understand ethical behaviour and business practises, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile, creativ and innovative. The applicant will also show the ability to think strategically, to plan, organize, and to make decisions, to recognise risks and solve problems.

Required qualifications are a post-secondary education or higher or an acceptable combination of education, training, and sufficient pratical experience in a management/ supervisory position, preferably in the nonprofit sector, and a high degree of computer literacy with strong research and writing abilities. An interest in museums and a willingness to learn about local history and heritage are fundamental for this position.
